With either side weak at matchpoints, I held the next playing cards: ♠ 8653 ♡ J3 ♢ AK52 ♣ QJ4.
RHO opponent opened one membership, I handed. LHO opponent bid one diamond, go from associate. The subsequent spherical was two golf equipment go, two diamonds.
At this level, I hoped that associate would go. As a substitute, she “balanced” with a double. I really needed to go two diamonds doubled for penalties, however RHO opponent bid 2NT.
The 2 opponents made it, partly as a result of they’d AKQ of spades between them, and the 120 factors they earned was an excellent rating for them (and a poor rating for us), relative to the 110s and 100s earned by others with their playing cards. If we had left them at 2 diamonds, they’d have made it and scored solely 90 (good for us, dangerous for them).
I might have been glad to remain out of the bidding as a result of the obvious “misfit” restricted the opponents’ trick taking potential. Our bid pushed them into a greater contract. Was this simply an unlucky consequence or was this actually an excellent time to chorus from contesting the public sale?
